One could not wish for a better host to lead a tour of Nutctracker The Exhibition!
Alun Jones was the Artistic Director for the Louisville Ballet from 1978 to 2002, during his tenure, Jones ushered in an era of unprecedented development and creativity. He created new choreography for the Nutcracker based on the version produced in 1960 for London Festival Ballet by Alexandre Benois. After a four year hiatus(1979 -1982), Jones relaunched a new Nutcracker production set in 1830 and featuring elaborate hand painted sets and Victorian costumes designed by London theater artist David Walker. Once again, in 1995, with a grant from Brown-Forman, Jones brought more changes to the choreography, re-staged the first act, and redesigned the costumes for Nutcracker himself! During this period, Jones took the stage in some of the productions as the mysterious Drosselmeyer. He retired from his position as the artistic director in 2002. Annie Honebrink wrote of Jones: “Under his leadership, the company flourished and grew exponentially. Jones fondly refers to that period as a “wonderful time” and a “golden era.”
