A Celebration of Frederick Law Olmsted’s 197th Birthday and Arbor Day

The Frazier in partnership with Trees Louisville and Olmsted Park Conservancy invites you to Frederick Law Olmsted’s 197th birthday party and Arbor Day celebration. Join us for music, birthday cake, and a tree giveaway in our Gateway Garden between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm.

We will be giving away 197 redbud, serviceberry & yellow tulip poplar saplings, and Olmsted Parks Conservancy and its Team for Healthy Parks will also plant a tree in honor of Olmsted that morning in Cherokee Park.

Join us as we continue the legacy of Olmsted, and his vision of bringing nature and parks into each and every neighborhood.

Olmsted’s Louisville, an exhibition at the Frazier, runs April 10 - October 20, 2019.

Frazier HistoRead - Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted, by Justin Martin

Join Amanda Briede, curator of Olmsted’s Louisville, and Frazier Museum Education for an exhibit tour and book discussion. Briede will lead a guided tour and discussion of Olmsted’s Louisville to showcase Olmsted’s legacy in, and contributions to, the people and neighborhoods of Louisville.

Afterward, we’ll discuss Justin Martin’s Genius of Place: The Life of Frederick Law Olmsted to take an in-depth look at Olmsted, his parks, and his life, connecting his life to his work and Louisville to his mission. While it is encouraged that attendees read the book prior to the discussion, it is not required to attend this event.

Frederick Law Olmsted is best known as designer of Central Park, as well as several public and private grounds across the country. In addition to his work as a landscape architect, Olmsted was a committed abolitionist, conservationist, and advocate for social reform.
